Workplace Injury Recovery

You and your employer have completed the paperwork and hopefully you are now well on the way to a recovery. Hopefully you have been declared eligible for financial compensation through the appropriate provincial Workers Compensation Board. If not, then hopefully your benefit plan will have a short and long-term disability structure where you can still get paid as you work to get back on your feet. If you are denied benefits for the workplace injury, then you must ensure that you take your claim and issues as far as you can possibly go. Many if not most of the Workers Compensation Boards will have a worker advisor who serves to advise clients on the next possible steps. They may instruct you to seek legal advice if you have exhausted all options with them and your benefit plan. Ensure this avenue is covered before you proceed to speak to a lawyer, as most law offices who are involved with this kind of law will point their clients in that direction before they even have an initial face to face meeting.

It is important that you follow whatever recommendations are made by your family physician and any treatment practitioners you are referred to. Some of those could be physiotherapists, massage therapists or even chiropractors. Your family physician will know which direction to point you in, since they share the same joint goal of wanting you to get back to work as soon as possible.

In some cases, you will be able to perform modified work set out by your employer. Your employer could have work available that will be less stressful on your body and the injured area. Do not be afraid to talk to your manager about modified work if it is available. Make suggestions if you feel there could be something. Most people will prefer to get back to work as soon as possible so modified work should be an option.

Workplace Injuries are preventable. If you see a potential safety hazard in the workplace, it is imperative that you report it as soon as possible. You could end up saving someone’s life, and prevent someone from being off work due to workplace injury.
